Founded in 1989 by founder-principal Ms Bhavani Kumar, Patasala Montessori School, Nungambakkam follows the Montessori approach of education laid down by Dr. Maria Montessori. Started with mere five children, the school today boasts over 100 children from two and a half to twelve years of age.
Patasala Montessori School, Nungambakkam comprises two primary environments for 2.5 to 6 year olds and one elementary environment for children between 6 and 12 years of age. All environments have 35 children each with two Montessori trained teachers to assist them with their work.
Patasala Montessori School hosts large, well ventilated classrooms with Montessori material lined on shelves that are easily accessible to children. Children work on mats with the Montessori material. The school also hosts an outdoor play area with play equipments and variety of plants and herbs.
Children in the primary environment start their day with warm greetings by the adults leave their bags and shoes in the designated place. Children are given the liberty to choose any activity that has already been presented to them and carry it to their working mats and continue to work on them as much as they want and then return the material to its rightful place. Children are also allowed to either work individually or with their peers or simply watch others or enjoy books in the reading corner or help younger children. Children are assembled in small groups by the teacher for activities such as storytelling, picture conversation, singing etc.
Children in the elementary environment start the day by putting away their shoes and bags, greet each other and begin care of the environment (dusting shelves, material etc.) and plan their work for the day. In the elementary environment, children work in small groups or pairs on an activity that is either follow-up of a previous lesson or a project based on the child’s interests. Math, language and geometric activities are done with specially designed Montessori materials that make abstract concepts more concrete for the child. Concepts in geography, history and biology are explored through independent research using encyclopedias, books, experiments and visits to place relevant to the subject. Children are also called for lessons or workshops by the adult; the size of the group called for a lesson rarely exceeds 6-7 children. Children are also engaged in stitching, crochet, reading story books, gardening, etc.
Prospectus and application forms may be collected from the school office throughout the year. However, children are admitted in June and November. The child must have completed 2.5 years of age before being considered for admission.
