Overview

Founded in 1962, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana is one of India’s premier state agricultural universities. PAU is located in Ludhiana city (Punjab) at a distance of 316 km from New Delhi. The main campus of the university sprawls over 1510 acres while the regional research stations cover a total of 4615 acres.

PAU was declared the Best Agricultural University in India in 1995 because of its outstanding achievements in agricultural research, education and extension. PAU aims to develop effective mechanism to transfer knowledge and technology to farmers and agricultural organisations through extension services.

Campus

The 1510 acre university campus hosts 10 research stations, and 5 seed farms. The well-stocked library with its five reading halls has a seating capacity of 760. The Electron Microscopy & Nanoscience Laboratory (EMNL) provides following facilities:

1. Scanning Electron Microscope (Hitachi S-3400N) with EDS (Thermo Noran System SIX)

2. Transmission Electron Microscope in both HC and HR modes (Hitachi H-7650)

3. Scanning Tunneling and Atomic Force Microscope (STM/AFM) operating in air (Veeco di CP-II Scanning Probe Microscope)

4. Leica Ultracut Microtome model UC6

5. Leica EM Cryo Chamber FC6 model

6. Ion Sputter Coater (Hitachi model E-1010) with gold and carbon coating units

7. Bench Top Evaporator (Polaron E6500 MHVE)

8. Critical Point Dryer (Polaron E3000 CPD)

The university hosts vast playgrounds for athletics, basketball, badminton, cricket, football, handball, kabaddi, volleyball, and lawn tennis. For hockey there is an Astroturf ground; in addition there is a swimming pool, a cycling velodrome and indoor stadium with a badminton court and facilities for table tennis, gymnastic, wrestling and weight lifting.

Academics

The university offers five Bachelor’s degree, 51 Master’s degree and 42 doctorate programmes under 50 departments of its five constituent colleges. PAU’s various departments offer the following courses:

1. Department of Chemistry offers Ph.D. in Chemistry, M.Sc. in Chemistry and Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry.

2. Department of Economics and Sociology offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Sociology.

3. Department of Biochemistry offers Ph.D. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry.

4. Department of Botany offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Botany.

5. Department of Microbiology offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Microbiology.

6. Department of Zoology offers Five Years Integrated M.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Zoology.

7. Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics offers M.Sc. in Physics

8. Department of Business Management offers MBA and Masters in Agricultural Business Management and Ph.D. in Business Management.

9. Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages & Culture offers MJMC (Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication): and PGDAJMC (Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Journalism and Mass Communication).

10. School of Agricultural Biotechnology (BSc., MSC, and Ph.D. in Biotechnology); this school includes the Bioinformatics Centre, established in 1998.

11. Department of Food Science and Technology offers B.tech (HONS.) in food technology and Msc in food science.

Placements:

The placement guidance cell of PAU trains students in honing one of the most demanded skills recruiters expect- communication skills. The placement guidance cell organises several training programmes, workshops, seminars and guest lectures for student personality development. The placement procedure is as follows:

  • The university invites various companies and recruiters to participate in the placement drive.
  • Participating recruiters then have the placement talks to generate awareness among students about their requirements and policies.
  • The recruitment process then begins, comprising tests, group discussions and the final round of technical and HR interview. Students clearing all rounds successfully will be given offer letters.

Recent placement highlights- The average CTC recorded in the most recent placement drive stood at INR 3.7 LPA, while the highest CTC was recorded at INR 9 LPA. Top recruiters participating in the placement drive included Aries Agro, Nestle, Pepsi, Chambak Fertilizers, CMC and IFFCO.

Admission

Undergraduate Admission- B.Sc., B.Tech. (Biotechnology/Food Technology)

Selection Criteria: Common entrance test (CET) scores, interview/counselling;

AAT for Architecture, DAT for Fashion Designing.

Eligibility: 10+2 (with PCM) from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50%.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admission to PAU by filling out the online application form along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to appear for the common entrance test (CET). This may be followed by an interview round.
  • Candidates applying to the B.Sc. Architecture programme have to appear and qualify for the IIT-conducted AAT, while those applying to the B.Sc. Fashion Designing programme have to appear and qualify for the NID-conducted DAT exam.
  • Candidates must register for the counselling process. Candidates shall be shortlisted based on their CET/AAT/DAT scores and performance in the counselling process and/or interview. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Undergraduate Admission- B.Tech. (Agricultural Engineering)

Selection Criteria: JEE Main score/rank and PTU counselling.

Eligibility: 10+2 (with PCM) from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50%.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admission to PAU by filling out the online application form along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to apply and appear for the JEE Main exam.
  • Candidates must register for the PTU counselling process. Candidates shall be shortlisted based on their JEE Main scores/ranks and performance in the PTU counselling process. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission

Selection Criteria: Master’s entrance test (MET) score and performance in interview.

Eligibility: Undergraduate degree in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admission to PAU by filling out the online application form along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to apply and appear for the Master’s entrance test (MET), followed by an interview round.
  • Candidates must register for the university-level counselling process. Candidates shall be shortlisted based on their MET scores and performance in the interview and PAU counselling process. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Doctoral Admission

Selection Criteria: Ph.D. entrance test (PET) scores, evaluation of thesis and performance in interview.

Eligibility: Master’s in in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum of 70% marks.

Admission Procedure:

  • Candidates must register for admission to PAU by filling out the online application form along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates will have to apply and appear for the Ph.D. entrance test (PET), followed by an interview round.
  • Candidates must register for the university-level counselling process. Candidates shall be shortlisted based on their PET scores (80% weightage), performance in the interview (10% weightage) and evaluation of their master’s research by thesis (10% weightage) in the PAU counselling process. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Achievement

PAU was declared the best state agricultural university in 1995 by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

PAU played a pivotal role to usher in the first green revolution which transformed the socio-economic life of the peasantry of the region. It enabled the country to achieve self-sufficiency in food grains.

PAU was the first university to get special grant of Rs 1 Billion from the Government of India in 2006-07, as an acknowledgement of its role in eliminating food shortages and alleviating hunger.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked Punjab Agricultural University 51 among universities in 2019.
