Overview

Founded on April 30, 1962, Punjabi University, Patiala is the largest university in the state of Punjab with 65 teaching and research departments, 500 teachers, 9000 students, five regional centres, six neighbourhood campuses and 166 affiliated colleges. The university has been awarded grade A by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Established with the objective of furthering the cause of Punjabi language, art and literature, the university has published over 3000 titles in Punjabi on various topics and has set up a special Punjabi Reference Library that is committed towards catering to the linguistic and cultural needs of the overseas Punjabis. The university has also started short-term linguistic and culture immersion programmes for NRI Punjabi Youth for fostering better understanding of Punjabi culture and heritage. Besides fostering academic and intellectual standards, the university aims towards encouraging education and rural development with the establishment of Yadavindra College of Engineering at Talwandi Sabo to increase the percentage of rural students (0.4 percent) getting into higher education. Neighbourhood campuses have been launched for advantage to the rural youth with provision of 50 percent reservation for students from the concerned sub-division and remaining 50 percent for students from rest of the rural Punjab. The Yadavindra College of Engineering at Talwandi Sabo offers an exclusive six-year integrated course for students of poor sections of the rural population from the most backward region of Punjab. These students do not have to pay fees for the course that otherwise costs Rs 45,000 per year.

Campus

Spread over 600 acres, the Punjabi University campus hosts several libraries including the Punjabi reference library which features a collection of over 1, 00,000 documents, Punjabi newspapers, magazines, books, diaries and rare manuscripts of 19th and 20th centuries and over 120 Punjabi newspapers and periodicals published across the world; the Central Library houses a 400 capacity majestic reading hall and its reference section stocks more than 5,00,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 600 journals, database of 2, 00,000 documents, internet facility and reprographic services; The Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha Central Library stocks more than 415,000 books, subscriptions and journals. It has a reading room, a separate air-conditioned hall and a night reading room; the Ganda Singh Punjabi Reference Library with a collection of 41,548 books on Punjabi Language, Literature, Punjab History and Culture. The campus also hosts the Centre for Teaching of Punjabi as a Foreign Language (CTPFL) which has taught Punjabi to over 100 seekers from the USA, Canada, Russia, China and Singapore, and an Advanced Centre for Technical Development of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture (ACTDPLC) which provides learning Gurmukhi/ Punjabi online, besides creating software for inter-script transfer between Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi. The Centre has now accomplished the unique distinction of launching the first of its kind a search engine in Punjabi. The campus hosts laboratories for each department, staff rooms, auditoriums, conference halls, the Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan, computer centre and a well equipped health centre with an AIDS awareness wing. The sports infrastructure includes well-maintained sports grounds for games such as hockey, football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, athletics, etc, an indoor games hall and a large gymnasium.
