Overview

Rashtriya Military School, Chail, Himachal Pradesh is an all boys residential school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. Established after the First World War in 1922 with a donation of INR 2,50,000 from King George V’s patriotic fund the school was christened as King George’s Royal Indian Military School and was later renamed as King George’s Royal Indian Military College (KGRIMC).

The school started with 250 students with an aim to impart free education to the sons of JCOs and NCOs and prepare them for various army examinations including the Indian Special Certificate of Education. The entire curriculum was based on Military requirements with English as the medium of instruction; the staff comprised of mostly military personnel.

The school was renamed again as Chail Military School with effect from January 1, 1966 and is now known as Rashtriya Military School Chail since June 25, 2007.

The school follows the motto “Sheelam param bhushnam” meaning “Character is the greatest virtue”.

Campus

The school boasts fully furnished classrooms with LAN facility and offers quality education using the latest teaching tools. The school houses well equipped labs for computer studies with internet facility. The school library features a collection of 16,000 books on various subjects.

The school is said to have the world’s highest cricket ground (at 7500 ft); other sports facilities include badminton, chess, squash, table tennis, athletics, basketball, boxing, football, hockey, lawn tennis and volleyball.

Academics

The school is affiliated with CBSE and students are prepared for AISSCE (class X) and AISSE (class XII) examinations. The school maintains a student teacher ratio of 10:1. Unit tests are held quarterly in addition to half yearly and annual examinations. Students are offered science, arts and commerce streams in classes XI and XII.

Extracurricular: Students undergo compulsory physical training in the morning and play sports in the evening. Being a member of the Indian Public School Conference (IPSC), the school participates in state and national level sports competitions. In 2007, RMS Chail cadets won six gold, seven silver and two bronze medals in the CBSE cluster XIII Athletics meet held at Chandigarh.

Students are also encouraged to participate in debates, declamations, quizzes, extempore, dance, theatre, poetry recitation in English and Hindi. They also participate in inter-house and interschool arts competitions. The school team is a participant in national and state level CCA meets.

Admission

The school entry level is from class VI and interested students aged between 10-12 years can appear in entrance exam for all military schools. This is followed by interview and medical examinations to join the school.

Admission to class IX is through a Common Entrance Test, which is conducted by the Rashtriya Military School Chail and admission to class XI is based on marks secured in the class X board exams.

67 percent of seats are reserved for the wards of JCOs, or those in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, including ex-servicemen. 20 percent of the seats are reserved for the wards of officers and 13 percent for the wards of civilians. 15 percent and 7.5 percent of the seats in each of these categories are reserved for SC and ST candidates. 10 seats in each Rashtriya Military School are reserved for wards of personnel killed in action.

Rashtriya Military School, Chail is ranked among the top 20 boys boarding schools in India by the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2020-21.

Students of Rashtriya Military School, Chail won six gold, seven silver and two bronze medals in the CBSE cluster XIII Athletics meet held at Chandigarh.

The school has bagged several laurels in the annual Inter Military Schools – Pentagular meet where all five military schools compete in several fields.
