The Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, also known as National Institute of Technology (NIT) Surat, is one of India’s premier engineering institutions promoted in 1961 by the Government of India. It is one among the country’s 17 Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) that came into being as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. It is also one among the 30 NITs approved by the Government of India. SVNIT took off with the objective of producing trained engineers and qualified scientists who could serve India’s advancements in R&D and technical requirements. The institute has now been conferred upon the status of a Deemed University and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Doctoral courses in Engineering and Technology, Science, Humanities and Management. The college has been ranked among the top 25 engineering colleges in India by leading education surveys conducted over the past few years. It has been consistently attracting big names in the industry such as Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Avaya, IBM, Infosys, and Deloitte to its campus every year for recruitment drives.

Campus

SVNIT is sited on Athwa-Dumas Road, Surat, opposite the Ichchhanath Temple in Piplod. The 250 acre campus offers adequate facilities for scholastic, co-scholastic and recreational activities. The central learning resource centers include a spacious central library, central computer centre, entrepreneurship development cell, continuing education centre and physical education section. Sports facilities include fields for outdoor sports like football, basketball, volleyball, and cricket. Other amenities include a cafeteria, student store, dispensary, guest house, post office, and bank branches.

Academics

At the undergraduate level, SVNIT offers the four year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) program in six engineering disciplines. At the post graduate level, SVNIT offers the Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master of Sciences (M.Sc.) programs. The Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) is also offered in all disciplines as part of its doctoral education program. The various departments at SVNIT are: Applied Chemistry Applied Mechanics Applied Math and Humanities Applied Physics Civil Engineering Chemical Engineering Computer Engineering Electronics Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Extra-Curricular Activities: SVNIT hosts cultural and technical programs, such as MindBend (technical festival), Sparsh (social and cultural festival) and Autumn Fest (automotive festival). All festivals are organized at the national level and are thronged by participants from institutes all over the country and even abroad.

Admission

Admissions for undergraduate courses at SVNIT are done on the basis of a valid AIEEE score, i.e. the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by CBSE. Qualifying students can apply for the B.Tech and integrated M.Sc courses at the institute. For postgraduate admissions, candidates need to have at least 60 percent marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average in the B.E./B.Tech or equivalent examination in the relevant discipline. They also need to have a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. SVNIT adheres to the reservation policy laid down by the Supreme Court of India, according to which, 27 percent seats are to be reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15 percent for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribes (STs). Foreign nationals are also accepted via scholarships awarded by the Government of India, while NRIs are inducted through Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA). Fees: Undergraduate B.Tech Programs, Postgraduate M.Tech degree, M.Sc, Ph.D programs, all attract a tuition fee of Rs 17,500 per semester. The total fee at the end of each semester amounts to Rs 35,500, 17,500 in the second semester and Rs 20,500 in the third semester.

Accommodation

SVNIT provides residential accommodation within the campus for students and staff. There are six hostels for boys and one for girls which can accommodate at least 900 to 1000 students. There are 191 staff quarter sections of different categories. Every hostel is well equipped with its own mess, TV room, computer and internet facility and sports room.
