Sri Venkateswara University (SVU), Tirupati was set up in 1954 with six departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Philosophy. The university was founded by the then chief minister Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu and is named after Lord Venkateswara whose shrine is located in the city. Today, the university boasts four constituent colleges, 54 departments with 72 different PG courses and several diploma and certificate courses, 400 faculty members, 1500 non-teaching staff and student strength of 5000, including research scholars. The university’s mission is to develop qualified and competent citizens through teaching and training, expand the horizons of knowledge through research, to lend knowledge and support to various organizations for their effective functioning, to contribute to the creation of a happy and healthy society through fruitful interaction with it, and to participate in the development of the society. The university’s motto is ‘Wisdom lies in proper perspective for it’.
Sri Venkateshwara University is sited on a sprawling 1000 acre campus which hosts the famous SV University library which was described as “Taj Mahal of the South” by Late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The library measures 56,637 square feet and houses four reading halls with a seating capacity for 400 users at a time. It features a collection of 3,68,315 documents including textbooks, reference books, general books, gift books, reports, back volumes of journals, M.Phil and Ph.D, dissertations and e-documents; the library subscribes to 465 current journals of national and international importance. The campus also hosts an auditorium, conference halls, computer centre, language labs, e-classrooms, health centre, gymnasium which has an indoor recreation hall with the facility to play table tennis, chess and caroms, hockey field, two flood lights tennis courts, basketball courts with galleries, two volleyball courts and two ball badminton courts, an outdoor stadium with 400 metres standard clay track and a big pavilion and galleries with facilities for playing cricket, football, handball, volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi. Other facilities include banks, post offices, schools, cooperative stores, canteens, counseling centre, internet hub, employment bureau, police station, women’s hostel, hostel for differently abled persons, faculty club, and alumni association.

Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati has been awarded Grade A by the NAAC with a score of 3.13 out of 4. SVU is the second largest university in the reorganised state of Andhra Pradesh, after Andhra University.
