Overview

St. Thomas Residential School (STRS) is a co-educational day-cum-boarding school affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). STRS was promoted in 1966 by The Mar Thoma Church Educational Society of the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church. STRS was ranked 25th in the Education World India Boarding School Rankings 2012 and the second-best boarding school in Kerala.

The school, which started with six students in a rented building in the heart of the city, now enrolls 3,000 students and boasts a plastic and smoke free 32-acre campus.

Campus

The 32-acre campus of St Thomas Residential School Thiruvananthapuram comprises academic facilities which include a state-of-the-art computer facility and science labs, a library, career care unit, cafeteria, infirmary, bank and chapel.

Sports & games facilities include a basketball court cum skating rink, tennis courts, a stadium, a hockey field and a football stadium. 

An efficient transportation system with 27 different bus-routes makes St. Thomas accessible to students from every part of the city and its suburbs. Apart from these, three buses are scheduled to operate at noon for the convenience of the nursery children.

Academics

For primary school students, each class has five divisions. The subjects taught are as follows.

Classes I – II: English, Malayalam, mathematics, environmental science, computer-aided learning, general knowledge, music, art, physical education, SUPW.

Class III: English, Malayalam, mathematics, environmental science, computer science, general knowledge, social studies, Hindi, music, art, physical education, SUPW.

Class IV: English, Malayalam, mathematics, science, social studies, computer science, general knowledge, Hindi, music, art, physical education, SUPW.

Evaluation is done on a continuous basis. Marks are allotted for a worksheet given in the class at the end of every chapter to evaluate students’ comprehension of the topic. Grades are also given for reading, spoken English skills and handwriting. These grades indicate the effort put in by students in their day-to-day work. 

Three terminal examinations are conducted in the months of September, December and March and the marks are shown separately in the report card.

Middle and High School students have the following subjects according to the CISCE curriculum: English I and II, environmental education, second language (Hindi, Malayalam, French), history and civics, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer application / economic application. 

A project work of 20 marks has to be completed in each subject. Evaluation of SUPW, physical education and value education is made on a regular basis and grades are sent to the Council.                         

The Higher Secondary students prepare for the ISC exams. English is a compulsory subject. Students are given a choice between the science group (mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology/computer application) and commerce group (accounts, business studies, economics and computer science/mathematics/commerce).

Admission

Admission is normally offered only to pre-primary-I (PPI or Lower Kindergarten) and class XI. Applicants seeking admission to PP-I are required to fill in the request form issued from the Society office generally during the month of October. The child should have completed three years and six months by 1st June of the year of admission. Admission to class I is based on a test conducted during the month of March or April.

In other classes, casual vacancies arising from time to time will be filled up from among applicants after testing the suitability of the student for admission. Formal applications are issued to the selected candidates on payment of the prescribed fee.

Admissions to class XI is made after the results of the class X examinations are known.

The time period of admission may undergo changes and interested persons are advised to keep in touch with the school.

Achievement

The school organises the annual inter-school cultural “Santhome Revolution” or “SanRevo” fest hosted by the school, which was conceptualized and started by the ISC 2007 batch and is one of the most awaited school fests each year.

Other fields of achievements include several quiz competitions (such as Enigma- an inter-school quiz (state level) on science and technology organized by St. Thomas Computer Centre and the ESPN sports quiz.

Students regularly participate in various inter-school competitions and win distinction and accolades. Some of the prominent ones are Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter-School Debate, Dr. A.V.Varghese Memorial Oratorical Contest, Rendezvous and La Fest.

Students also take part in various sports tournaments and competitions such as St. Thomas Trophy Basketball and Trophy Hockey, inter-house tournaments in basketball, hockey and football, roller skating and cricket matches organized in the school or elsewhere. Such sporting events organized annually help to develop true sportsman spirit, team spirit and cooperation. 

Accommodation

There is a separate junior and senior girls and boys hostel on campus. The cafeteria serves nutritious food to boarders as well as day scholars.
