Stella Maris College, a Catholic minority institution was founded on August 15, 1947. The college started in a small one-storey building in Santhome, Mylapore with 32 students and moved to its present campus “The Cloisters” on Cathedral Road in 1960.
Stella Maris College became autonomous in the year 1987. It is affiliated to the Madras University and run by the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.
The mission of the college is to empower young women to face the challenges of life with courage and commitment, to be builders of a humane and a just society, to promote a learning community in which all, especially those from less-privileged backgrounds, feel part of the collaborative high quality educational process.
The Stella Maris College Campus has widespread academic and co-curricular facilities. Divided over several blocks, the campus includes a library, student centre, chapel, canteen and an open-air theatre. Sports facilities include a basketball court and a tennis court. The campus also houses hostels for resident students and faculty.

The college was one of the few chosen to start the pilot project of the National Service Scheme in 1968. It became autonomous in 1987 and from the 1990s the college started offering new job-oriented courses and additional sections for the departments of B.Com and Mathematics. It restructured its system of education by introducing a credit-based system in 1997.
There are five hostels for resident students: Our Lady’s Hostel, St. Joseph Hostel, Nava Nirmana Hostel, Klemens Hostel and Snehalaya Hostel. The residents have access to all modern facilities.
