Overview

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai was founded in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was rechristened to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Today, TISS also operates out of campuses in Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Tuljapur. TISS was conferred the status of a deemed university in 1964 by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded a 5-Star rating to TISS in 2002 and re-accredited the institute in 2010 as a Grade A institution with a score of 3.88 out of 4. TISS aspires to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, and social justice.

Campus

The 21 acre TISS campus hosts state-of-the-art facilities to supplement classroom teaching. The computer centres and e-library provides access to a large number of online catalogue and journals. The central library features 1,02,958 volumes of books and journals.

Academics

TISS offers undergraduate programmes, postgraduate programmes (M.A., M.Phil., Phd,), online certificate programmes, and short term programmes. Admission

Candidates can apply for only one campus and one programme. Details on the admission process can be obtained from http://admissions.tiss.edu/. Eligibility criteria 1. Candidate should have passed class XII or intermediate level in any stream from a recognised board. 2. Candidate who is awaiting class XII or intermediate results can also apply. If selected, final pass result should be produced at the time of joining. Age Limit Candidate should be less than 23 years of age at the time of appearing for the Bachelors Admission Test (BAT). Reservation: Reservation of seats is as per Government of India rules: 15 percent for scheduled castes, 7.5 percent for scheduled tribes, 27 percent for other backward classes (Non-Creamy Layer) and 1 percent for Kashmiri migrants. Eligible candidates can apply online through the TISS website. Important Note 1. Candidates submitting E-application in multiple numbers will be disqualified 2. Application fee is non-refundable 3. Accommodation

TISS campus provides six hostels. The hostels are wi-fi enabled and can accommodate 500 students. Students of full time Master M.Phil and Ph.D degree programmes can avail of the hostel facility. Each room in the hostel is equipped with a bed, a mattress, a table, a chair and a cupboard.
