Overview

Founded in 1956, Thapar University, formerly known as ‘Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology’, is sited on a sprawling green campus in the historic city of Patiala in Punjab. The university has been accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Thapar University is reckoned among the leading privately managed engineering institutions of the country. Its mission is to make Patiala, Punjab and India proud of being the most sustainable region of the world through creating, disseminating and applying actionable engineering knowledge. The university boasts 5000 graduate students and 600 post graduate students, and over 250 well-qualified teaching staff.

Campus

Thapar University’s 250 acre sprawling green campus hosts the following facilities: Seminar room Meeting room Waiting lounge Computing facility Communication facilities The central library is open 24 hours and features a collection of about 60,000 printed volumes including (books, textbooks, standards and theses & dissertations), general collection, reference collection, text book collection, book bank, light reading collection, journals and magazine. The e-library provides access to a large number of online and CD-ROM based electronic information resources, such as bibliographic databases and electronic journals. The sports facilities include several playgrounds, a well-maintained athletic track, a gymnasium-cum-badminton hall and a swimming pool complex equipped with modern facilities.

Academics

The university offers undergraduate programmes leading to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree and postgraduate programmes leading to Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Software Engineering, Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degrees. B.E programmes are offered in the following streams: Biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering-MBA, software engineering and management. Extra-curricular activities: With an aim to aid holistic personality development of students, the university promotes diverse activity and interest groups such as literary society, music and dramatic society (MUDRA), fine arts and painting society, youth welfare club, society for promotion of indian classical music & culture amongst youth (SPIC MACAY), creative computing society, dance club, and movie club.

Accommodation

The university houses six boys hostels and four girls hostels. Each hostel room is equipped with cots, study tables, curtains and a storage space. Entertainment facilities include LCD TV with DTH in the common area, uninterrupted power supply, well equipped gym, photostat corner, and indoor and outdoor games facilities. A night canteen, medical facilities and first aid box along with 24 hour ambulance service are other facilities available for the comfort and safety of hostel residents.
