The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi was established in 2005 with an aim to advance and disseminate legal education and its role in national development. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). NUALS has inked MOUs with prominent universities in Australia, France, Czech Republic and Switzerland. Academic collaboration agreements with universities in Belgium, UK and USA are in the process of being finalized.
NUALS sprawls over 10 acres of hi-tech Park at Kalamassery, Kochi, the industrial capital of Kerala and the seat of the Kerala High Court, offering the best in class facilities to its students. The campus comprises an academic block, amenities center and faculty apartments. The construction of the administrative block and library block, with assistance from the UGC and state government, is in progress. The NUALS campus provides adequate academic infrastructure - dedicated internet access, Wi-Fi connectivity, on-line legal resources including Hein online, Westlaw India and Manupatra, a computer lab, besides a good collection of standard books and reports, both foreign and Indian. The NUALS library features a collection of over 7,300 volumes covering a wide range of general and specialised subjects including textbooks, reference books, back volumes of journals and reports. The library subscribes to several leading law journals, both Indian and international, besides a number of newspapers and magazines. The library has also been enriched by donations from renowned personalities such as Honourable Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, T.P. Kelu Nambiar, senior advocate, High Court of Kerala and Late Achuthan Unni (Retd. District Judge).
The NUALS, Kochi offers: 5 year BA LLB (Hons) Degree: The Five Year Programme is grouped into ten semesters i.e., two semesters in each academic year. As part of its BA LLB (Hons.) Degree programme, the university offers courses on frontier areas of law such as Maritime Law, Media & Telecommunications Law, Forensic Science, and Psychological Medicine & Law. 2 year LLM Degree: The LL.M. Degree Programme of NUALS is a full time course of two years' duration delivered through credit and semester system, with each year comprised of two semesters. Ph.D PG Diploma
Admission to the 5-Year BA LLB (Hons.) Degree programme (Choice Based Credit & Semester) and the 2 year LLM Degree programme is made through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The CLAT is an All India Entrance Examination conducted by 11 National Law Universities for admissions to their undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
