Overview

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Science (WBNUJS) is an autonomous law university reckoned as one of the best amongst the elite national law schools in India built on the five-year law degree model proposed and implemented by the Bar Council of India (BCI). WBNUJS was established under the WBNUJS Act, 1999 (West Bengal Act IX of 1999) adopted by the West Bengal Legislature in July, 1999. The university was notified under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2004 and has been granted permanent affiliation by the Bar Council of India in July 2005. The NUJS, Kolkata, along with the NLSIU, Bengaluru, are the only two national law schools in the country which have the Honourable Chief Justice of India as the Chancellor. All other National Law Schools have the Chief Justice of the respective state High Courts as their Chancellors.

Campus

The 5 acre campus of WBNUJS comprises an academic block that houses two fully air conditioned conference rooms, two huge lecture theatres, offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar, offices of the faculty members and staff, LLB and LLM classrooms, a canteen and the NUJS library with seating capacity for 400 people and a collection of over 14000 titles, subscription to 124 journals, 5000 volumes of bound periodicals, CD-ROMs and legal databases providing online access via major legal platforms including SCC, Grand Jurix, Heinonline, Westalw, Lexis Nexis, and Manupatra online. The campus also hosts an auditorium, the halls of residence, a guest house and a gymnasium for the students and the staff and faculties of NUJS. Each faculty member of NUJS has an independent desk/work station, access to a personal computer/laptop and internet facilities in their respective offices with adequate storage space and access to other desk services such as printing and intercom services in their offices.

General Information

Admission

LLM The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) with atleast 55 percent or an equivalent CGPA from any Indian university recognised by UGC or any equivalent degree offered by a foreign university. The candidate must have been allotted with a seat through the All India Admission Test for LLM organised by NUJS coupled with the requisite merit in the form of work experience, publications and statement of purposes. Provisional admission may be offered, subject to the approval of CPGLS, for an applicant, whose result is due, to undertake the program provided the result / provisional degree certificate is submitted before the beginning of the first semester examination. In case, the provisionally admitted candidate fails to submit the result /provisional degree certificate before the beginning of the first semester examination, the provisional admission of the candidate shall stand cancelled. MPhil Eligibility: The candidate should hold Master’s degree of any recognised university, with a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent CGPA. However, this condition is relaxed to 50 percent in case of candidates belonging to SC and ST. Selection procedure: Admission to MPhil takes place through an entrance test and interview. Applications for entrance test are invited in July, depending on the vacancies existing in each specialised area. Candidates who have qualified for UGC/SLET/SET/JRF fellowships are exempted from the entrance test. Foreign candidates who have LL M degree from a foreign university or Indian university with a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent CGPA shall be exempted from the requirement of entrance test, provided that the PG Council is satisfied about their research proposal. Provisional Registration: Selected candidates shall apply in the prescribed form for Provisional Registration as M.Phil. Candidates after payment of stipulated fee to the university. PhD Eligibility: Candidate holding Master’s degree of any university recognised by UGC or an equivalent Master’s degree of foreign University, with a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent CGPA. However, this condition is relaxed to 50 percent in case of candidates belonging to SC and ST. In case of foreign university, the factor of equivalence shall be decided by the Doctoral committee. Entrance Test: Admission to Ph.D programme takes place through an entrance test and interview. Applications for entrance test are invited in July, depending on the vacancies existing in each specialised area. Candidates who have qualified for UGC/SLET/SET/JRF fellowships are exempted from the entrance test. Candidates with M Phil degree from any recognised University are exempted from entrance test. Foreign candidates who have LL M degree from a foreign university or Indian university with a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent CGPA shall be exempted from the requirement of entrance test, provided that the Doctoral Committee (Ph.D) is satisfied with their research proposal. Provisional Registration: Selected candidates shall apply in the prescribed form for Provisional Registration as Doctoral Candidates after payment of stipulated fee to the university. Achievement

LexisNexis Halsbury's Law Monthly rates NUJS as a Tier One law school, jointly with the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad and the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore and states that NUJS's placement process is at par with the other two colleges in the top tier. The faculty members of NUJS are involved in many research activities and have published their research in many reputed journals such as Australian Journal of Asian Law, Chinese Yearbook of Human Rights, European Intellectual Property Review, Intellectual Property Quarterly, International Journal of Biotechnology, International Journal of Minority and Group Rights, International Trade Law and Regulation, International Journal of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, Journal of World Intellectual Property, Journal of World Trade, Journal of International Arbitration, Journal of International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict, Journal of World Investment and Trade, Manchester Journal of International Economic Law, Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights, Proceedings of the Colloquium on Law of Outer Space and others. The national journals include Company Law Journal, Economic and Political Weekly, Indian Journal of International Law, Indian Journal of Law and Technology, ISIL Yearbook of International Humanitarian and Refugee Law, Journal of the Indian Law Institute, Journal of Intellectual Property Rights, NUJS Law Review Supreme Court Cases and others. NUJS faculties have also published books with reputed publishers like the Oxford University Press, Lexis Nexis Butterworths, Eastern Book Company etc and have also contributed papers in edited volumes published by reputed publishing houses. NUJS faculties also contribute to key national dailies such as the Indian Express, The Hindu, The Statesman, Business Standard, Financial Express, The Hindu Business Line, The Pioneer etc.

Accommodation

NUJS hosts separate hostels for boys and girls which can accommodate about 500 students. The hostels offer mess facilities, common dining area with a television and other sporting facilities.
