This higher ed institute gamifies entrance test to assess students’ objectivity

May 2, 2023

In March, over 8,000 candidates who attended the GITAM Admission Test (GAT)—the entrance exam qualifying admissions to GITAM (Deemed to be University) —experienced a unique, innovative way of test-taking. Available in a new gamified format, the logical reasoning (LR) and English sections of the GAT tested candidates on their language, critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and decision-making capabilities while making the exam more interactive and enjoyable. This adds to the list of many firsts for GITAM (deemed to be University), making it the first (deemed to be University) in India to introduce gamification in their entrance examination.

Admission authorities at the varsity expect many more candidates to take the exam in this new format, in Phases 2 and 3, for the academic year 2023–24. Gamification as a method of testing, training, and learning is gradually picking up in India. One potential benefit of gamified entrance exams is that they could help reduce test anxiety and improve motivation among test-takers.

Commenting on the new gamified format, P.A.V.S. Sekhar, Senior Director, Admissions, at GITAM (deemed to be University) said, “We are thrilled to introduce this new gamified format for the GITAM Admission Test. This innovative approach to testing is in line with our commitment to provide students with a modern and engaging learning experience. By gamifying the test, we hope to encourage students to take an active role in their own learning and help them to develop the skills they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.”

The new gamified format of the GITAM Admission Test features interactive game elements that challenge students to think creatively and solve problems in real-time with much better accuracy. In this new format, each student gets a different set of system-generated questions to solve, which is difficult to manipulate and completely avoids plagiarism, which has been tested with enhanced security.

While Logical Reasoning (LR) and English will be in the gamified format (30 questions to be completed in 50 minutes), Science-related questions pertaining to Maths/Biology/ Physics/Chemistry will be in MCQ format, with a total of 70 questions (30, 30, and 20 MCQs for Math/Biology, Physics, and Chemistry respectively) to be attempted in 80 minutes. For a few courses — such as in BBA, MBA, Sciences, Law, and Humanities faculty—a  Personal Interview (PI) is conducted apart from an online test.

GAT is a competitive exam conducted for the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate programme admissions at GITAM (Deemed to be University). The gamified test format is deployed for admissions across all its campuses: Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and GIMSR. The test is conducted at various designated centres across different Indian states.
