On Friday, the Trinamool Congress students’ wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), staged demonstrations outside several colleges in Kolkata. The protests aimed to push for an amendment to the existing rape laws to ensure capital punishment for offenders following a swift conviction in fast track courts.
TMCP members also demanded a faster CBI investigation into the alleged rape and murder case involving a doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The body of the doctor was discovered in a seminar room on August 9, fueling the students’ calls for justice.
TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya stated, “We demand a change in the law to ensure that rapists receive capital punishment after prompt conviction. This issue has already been highlighted by our leaders, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.”
Bhattacharya further emphasized that the protests were a direct response to the horrific crime and expressed frustration with the current pace of the investigation. He urged the CBI to expedite their probe, identify all those involved, and ensure that justice is served for the victim and her family. The TMCP’s actions underscore a broader call for stricter legal measures and more effective law enforcement in response to serious crimes.
