A district-level committee, appointed by the National Commission for Women (NCW), was tasked with determining whether a transgendered teacher was dismissed from their position owing to their gender identity. Following a thorough examination of the matter, the panel, composed of four members, has exonerated the management of the private school in question, declaring the accusations to be unfounded.

The trans woman, Jane Kaushik, was discharged from her duties as a Social Science teacher at the institution in Lakhimpur Kheri last year. Despite her dismissal, Kaushik persisted in her allegations of discrimination and brought her case to the attention of the NCW as well as local law enforcement agencies.

However, the school management maintains that Kaushik’s proficiency lay solely in the teaching of the English language and not in the subjects of social science for which she was hired. Furthermore, the school has lodged a defamation suit worth 1 crore rupees against Kaushik, claiming that her allegations have damaged the reputation of the institution in the eyes of society.

In light of the committee’s findings, Kaushik stated to the press her dissatisfaction with the panel’s report, stating that it was based solely on statements given by students and teachers who may have been influenced by the school authorities. She also stated that evidence submitted to the independent committee established under the district magistrate was not given due consideration. Kaushik, who was earlier known as Rahul, affirmed that she and her legal counsel are currently reviewing the report and will be submitting a response to the NCW.
