Two Grade 10 students were stabbed by classmates in a classroom at a Mumbai school during a dispute over seating arrangements for internal exams, police reported on Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday morning at a private school in Antop Hill, Central Mumbai, just before the preliminary exams were about to begin.
The injured students, both 15 years old, are receiving treatment at the civic-run Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion.
According to the police, an argument broke out between two students over a bench in the exam hall on the fourth floor. The argument escalated when one of the students called a friend to bring a knife. The student used the knife to stab his classmate in the abdomen, back, and hand.
When another student tried to intervene, the assailant attacked him as well, causing injuries.
The situation was eventually brought under control with the help of other students. Both injured students were immediately rushed to the hospital.
Police have registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and causing hurt with dangerous weapons. Investigations are ongoing.
