Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT), Pune, a co-educational autonomous institution affiliated with the Pune University, was founded in 1983, by the Pune-based Bansilal Ramanath Agrawal Charitable Trust (BRACT). BRACT is a registered society established under the Bombay Public Trust Act in 1975 with the purpose of promoting educational, cultural and social activities. VIT through its seven departments – Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial/Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Engineering Sciences and Humanities, Electronics Engineering – offers nine undergraduate, eight postgraduate and six doctoral programmes all of which are approved by the New Delhi-based All India Institute of Technical Education (AICTE). The college has a Department of Self Development (DoSD) that handles campus placements. Every Year nearly 100 to 120 companies visits VIT, Pune for recruitment, offering students a package of upto Rs.11 lakh per annum.
Spread over 17 acres of landscaped greenery (7 acres for academic buildings, 10 acres for playground, hostels and staff quarters), the VIT campus offers students an ideal environment for learning. VIT campus is Wi-Fi enabled and hosts basic facilities like modern laboratories, 700-seater air-conditioned auditorium, gymnasiums, parking lot, medical centre, cafeteria and a Central library, apart from other facilities. The Central Library, established in 1984, comprises Reference Section, Journal Section, Reading Hall and Stack-Room. It features a unique collection of 54,000 encyclopedia, handbooks, textbooks and subscription to 82 international and 126 national journals, as well as audio-video learning aids. Off-campus hostels and playgrounds for students and staff quarters are also available at a distance of 1.5 kilometers from the institute.

Admission to all courses is based on merit as per rules and norms laid down by the Director Technical Education (DTE, www.dte.org.in), Maharashtra State. For all undergraduate courses, students with 45 percent marks in English, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in the higher secondary school examination of the Maharashtra State Board or its equivalent (40 percent for scheduled caste/schedule tribes/other backward classes) can apply. For candidates seeking admission under the state-quota (65 percent seats), the qualifying exam is Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET). Others have to qualify the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the New Delhi-based Central Board of Secondary Education. Candidates seeking management quota have to compete in either of these entrances and apply to the management of the institute separately. For diploma holders passing out of polytechnic approved by the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education or the AICTE, a minimum of 50 percent marks is needed. The institute has established academic cooperation with various international universities of repute for Student Exchange Programmes and Research Collaboration, such as Marist College from U.S.A., Binghamnton University from U.S.A., Penn State University from U.S.A., Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland, a group of 17 Universities from State of Ontario in Canada, Group des Ecoles des Mines, France, AIT based in Bangkok. Every year more than 15 students from all the departments are benefited by this international exposure. VIT has received the IMC Ramakrishna Bajaj National Quality Award.
