As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, marking thirty years since the Beijing Declaration, EducationWorld is proud to feature Dr. Kashmira Jamali, Principal of Beacon High, a visionary educator dedicated to fostering inclusive and equal learning opportunities for all.
Coming from a family of three generations of women educators and leaders, Dr. Jamali has witnessed firsthand how education transforms individuals, families, and communities. From the struggles her mother faced as a female educator to the opportunities available today, her journey reflects the progress made and the challenges that remain in achieving true gender parity in education.
Steps to Achieve Gender Parity in Education
According to Dr. Jamali, gender equality in education must be intentional—achieved not just through policy but through real actions in classrooms and communities. At Beacon High, her approach focuses on:
1. Gender-inclusive learning from early years – Girls are enrolled from pre-primary and exposed to curricula that challenge stereotypes and encourage ambition.
2. Highlighting women’s achievements – Thematic days like Breaking Barriers Day and Equality for All Day introduce students to inspirational women in history, reinforcing diversity and inclusion.
3. Gender-neutral language in classrooms – Teachers are trained to use inclusive vocabulary (e.g., chairperson instead of chairman, business owner instead of businessman), fostering an environment of equality.
4. Encouraging subject choices based on passion, not gender roles – Students are empowered to break stereotypes—girls excelling in Math, boys opting for Home Science, and all students pursuing their interests freely.
5. Creating safe learning spaces – A zero-tolerance policy against discrimination, harassment, and bullying ensures that every child thrives without fear.
According to the 2023 City Census, Mumbai’s literacy rate stands at 91.48% for males and 86.45% for females. While progress has been made, the journey towards gender equality in education is far from over.
“Gender equality in education is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right. When we create truly inclusive learning spaces, we don’t just empower girls; we uplift entire societies. When education is accessible to all, progress follows for everyone.” – Dr. Kashmira Jamali
