Preeyaj Safary, a talented 19-year-old BTech student at NMIMS Mumbai, is making waves in the field of social innovation with his latest invention. Passionate about coding and determined to use technology for the greater good, Preeyaj has created an AI-powered translating device aimed at removing communication barriers for the deaf and dumb community.
Preeyaj’s journey towards this breakthrough innovation began during his school days when he actively participated in community service through the Rotary club. However, it was during his 9th grade when he got exposed to the world of technology and artificial intelligence, igniting a spark of curiosity within him. Inspired to leverage his coding skills for a meaningful cause, he started searching for opportunities to make a positive impact.
The young inventor’s inspiration struck while visiting a restaurant, where he observed deaf and dumb staff diligently serving customers. Realizing the challenges they might face in communicating with the outside world, Preeyaj conceptualized an AI model that could translate sign language into text and vice versa. Determined to bring this idea to life, he painstakingly collected sign images from various sources, creating a database to train his AI prototype.
When asked about his invention being labeled as a “breakthrough,” Preeyaj humbly stated that it was merely the application of technology to address a specific problem. However, his innovation has received positive feedback from friends and family, acknowledging its potential to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the deaf and dumb community.
This isn’t the first time Preeyaj has put his skills to good use. During the height of the Covid-19 vaccination program, he created a BOT that helped elderly and differently-abled individuals check for vaccine slot availability, easing their booking process.
When questioned about his choice of AI for the project, Preeyaj emphasized the immense power of artificial intelligence in transforming lives. He believes that when used responsibly, AI can create wonders and find solutions to real-world problems.
