Alagappa Institute of Technology (AIT), Karaikudi was founded on September 2001 by R. Vairanvan, the grandson of Dr. RM Alagappa Chettiar - the founder of the Alagappa group of institutions which are actively involved in primary, collegiate and post graduate education. It was declared an autonomous college with effect from 2009 and is a member institute of the World Bank assisted TEQIP - Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme in India. The placement department of the institute arranges campus interviews and employment tests periodically with various organizations for final year students. It also facilitates interviews for the pre-final year and final year students for direct entry into the Indian Navy under the University Entry Scheme. The department also secures placements for the civil engineering graduates in various government departments including Highways Department and Public Works Department.
