The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda originated from the Baroda College of Science which was established in 1881. The college grew to a university when Dr. Jackson, Principal of the Baroda College in 1908 propagated the need for a Science Institute; this resulted in appointment of the first Commission in 1909 to expand activities of Baroda College by establishing additional chairs in new branches of knowledge. In 1916 Shri S V Mukerjea further advocated the establishment of a University at Baroda and thus the university was finally started in 1949 and named as University of Baroda. It was later renamed after its benefactor Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, former ruler of Baroda State. The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is the only state university with a residential, unitary character offering English as the sole medium of instruction with more than 1200 faculty members, 1500 administrative staff and 35000 students. MSU boasts 13 Faculties (Arts, Commerce, Education & Psychology, Family & Community Sciences, Fine Arts, Journalism & Communication, Law, Management Studies, Medicine, Performing Arts, Science, Social Work, Technology & Engineering) with 90 departments, three constituent colleges (Polytechnic, MK Amin Arts and Science College and College of Commerce, Padra and Baroda Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya) and several specialised centres and institutes offering wide spectrum of courses from kindergarten to PhD.
