Founded as Ahmedabad Medical School in 1871 with 14 students, BJ Medical School was affiliated with the Civil Hospital in the city of Ahmedabad. In 1879, Byramjee Jeejeebhoy made a large donation to the school, following which it was renamed after him as B J Medical School. The school grew and became affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay in 1917. In 1946, the school obtained affiliation with Bombay University and then achieved higher status for itself to become B.J. Medical College, providing diplomas for LCPS. In 1951, The college was affiliated with Gujarat University for its undergraduate courses. The postgraduate courses were affiliated to the Gujarat University in 1956. The college serves as a center for the National Board of Medical Examinations for various subjects and has made notable contributions in the field of medical studies. The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has recognized the college for its innovation in integrated teaching and training programs in child health services and universal immunization.
The college library caters to 2400 medical students, teachers, and research workers and is the largest resource of bio-medical literature in the state of Gujarat. The library can comfortably accommodate 500 persons and features a collection of 41,000 books and back volumes of journals, 3434 dissertations, 2032 reports, proceedings and an annual subscription of 236 current journals. Besides the regular members, it is open to entire biomedical community of state. The campus hosts well equipped laboratories and test rooms, a gymkhana, recreation room and an inhouse canteen. The college campus also houses residential flats for faculty members and staff equipped with cable TV, telecom facility, 24 hours security, water supply and electricity supply. The residential area is located on a pollution free area and provides healthy living conditions.

For MBBS Total No of seats per year: 250 Candidates should have passed HSC with biology as an inclusive subject and appeared in GUJCET Exam the same year. Minimum 70 percent marks are required in theory physics, chemistry and biology for general category students. For reserve categories minimum requirement 40 percent marks required in theory physics, chemistry and biology. There are no NRI Seats in this college.
