Schools in Delhi have received a directive from the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education to establish committees for surprise bag checks aimed at preventing students from bringing potentially harmful objects. The circular underscores the importance of regular bag inspections conducted by gate guards and the continuous operation of CCTV cameras in schools. The issuance of this directive follows incidents of student altercations during school hours.
The circular mandates that all heads of government and private schools prioritize student safety by forming committees for random bag checks. These checks are intended to ensure that students do not possess materials that could be used to harm others. Alongside these measures, school heads are instructed to ensure that gate guards consistently inspect bags for unwanted items and maintain the functional status of CCTV cameras.
In addition to these security measures, the directive limits the entry of visitors into classrooms and staff rooms. While Aparajita Gautam, the president of the Delhi Parents’ Association, has welcomed this initiative, concerns have been raised about the practical implementation, especially in government schools with limited manpower. Gautam suggests that the Delhi government should introduce more effective measures to enhance student safety, particularly in government schools.
This directive gains significance in the context of a recent incident in south Delhi where a class 11 student was stabbed to death by three teenagers. This tragic event has heightened the urgency for improved safety measures in schools, prompting authorities to address potential lapses and reinforce security protocols across educational institutions.
