Faculty of Law of Aligarh Muslim University, was established in 1894 as a constituent college of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh. It is one of the oldest law colleges in the country, established as a non-profit student organization. It is modeled along the lines of the University of Cambridge and holds the distinction of being one of the first institutions of higher learning set up during the British Raj. AMU was originally affiliated with the University of Calcutta and subsequently got affiliated with the University of Allahabad in 1885. Near the turn of the century, the college began publishing its own magazine, The Aligarian, and established a law School.
The institute provides spacious classrooms, well-stocked library equipped with modern facilities and a large number of books and journals. At present the library houses 24,000 books. The research scholars can access the seminar library for their higher studies. The college also facilitates health services, sports center, and computer center.
Faculty of Law, Aligarh University offers Undergraduate programme BA LLB Hons.: 5 years Postgraduate programme LLM PG Diploma course: 1 year PG Diploma in Labor law and Labor Relations: 1 year The Faculty of Law, AMU, follows a semester system under which the academic year is divided into two semesters and six subjects are taught in each semester for B.A.LL.B. program. Similarly, the LLM (General) programme comprises study of the six compulsory courses and four courses in the area of optional subjects and a dissertation prepared during fourth semester. Areas of Specialization: Commercial Law, Personal Law, International Law, Human Rights Law, Labour Law, Constitutional Law.
