Hijab row: Muslim organisation calls for Karnataka bandh on March 17

March 16, 2022
The Ameer-E-Shariat Karnataka’s Maulana Sagir Ahmad Khan Rashadi has called for a peaceful state-wide bandh on Thursday across Karnataka.

He said in a statement that the call for the bundh is to express “sadness” on the verdict of the High Court’s verdict on Hijab which was given on Tuesday. The court deemed that Hijab was not an essential religious practice as per Islam.

The full bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice J M Khazi also said that colleges were allowed to prescribe uniform and that it does not amount to violation of any fundamental right.

In a video message, Rashadi urged, “I request all the Muslims to listen to the order.  Read out here attentively and implement it strictly. Expressing our anger against the sad order of the Karnataka High Court regarding hijab, there will be a day-long complete Bandh across the Karnataka State.”

He also appealed to every section of the Muslim community to participate and make it successful. “Convey to the rulers that it is possible to get education while adhering to the religious practices. We also request every Justice-loving people and the Millat-e-Islamia to follow bandh,” Rashadi said.

He also requested the members of the community to only observe a peaceful bandh.

“Youth are requested that they should not impose bandh by closing shops forcibly, or indulge in sloganeering or processions. This bandh has to be peaceful, silent and aimed at only expressing our anger,” the religious leader said.
