Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently announced an initiative to support underprivileged students by providing them with education loans worth Rs.20 lakh. This will enable students from economically weaker backgrounds to pursue higher education.

The education loan scheme will primarily focus on students who have secured a minimum of 60% in their previous classes but lack the financial means to pursue higher studies. By providing them with these loans, the government aims to unlock opportunities for deserving students. “Education is a fundamental right and should not be limited by any form of financial constraints,” says Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Students up-to the age of 28 years are eligible to apply and the loan amount will be provided at a subsidized interest rate, ensuring repayment is manageable for beneficiaries. The loan will cover tuition fees, board and lodging, books and other educational expenses.

The implementation and monitoring of the education loan scheme will be done by the education department to ensure effective utilization of funds. Students applying for full-time diplomas and degrees in professional and technical education are eligible to apply. Students pursuing correspondence or online courses don’t qualify for this loan.
