IIT Madras goes global. First offshore campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania

India has signed an agreement with the Tanzanian government to establish a first-of-its-kind offshore campus of the Indian Institute of Technology.

This will be the first of its kind agreement to establish a foreign campus for the premier Institute – IIT Madras. The campus is set to open in October. To begin with, 50 undergraduate students and 20 postgraduate students will be admitted in the inaugural batch.

On Thursday a memorandum of understanding was signed between India’s Ministry of Education, IIT Madras and Tanzania’s Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Zanzibar.

According to the ministry of external affairs, while IIT Madras will be the authority for designing academic programmes and curricula besides setting student eligibility criteria, the capital and operating expenditure will be met by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania.

IIT Madras Tanzania hopes to attract students from across Africa and will offer Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees in Data Science and AI (Artificial Intelligence), M. Tech programs in Energy Systems and Cyber-Physical Systems among other programmes.

Union minister for education, Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted, “Signing of MoU between, @EduMinOfIndia, @iitmadras, and MoEVT, Zanzibar-Tanzania for setting up of IIT Madras-Zanzibar campus marks a historic beginning towards internationalisation of Indian education. The initiative is an embodiment of PM @narendramodi’s commitment to strengthen South-South cooperation as well as forge stronger people-to-people ties with Africa. NEP is paving the way for making knowledge a key component of bilateral relations as well as for advancing global good.”
