Karnataka: Holiday declared for schools and colleges in Dakshina Kannada over rainfall warning

After an orange alert for heavy rainfall was issued in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada region, a holiday has been declared for schools, colleges and anganwadi centres here.

All government and private schools and Pre university colleges in Mangaluru, Bantwal, Mulki, Moodbidri and Ullal have remained shut. Orange alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada till July 6.

Guidelines issued by the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner advises parents not to allow their children to venture into low-lying areas in the region. They have also been directed to refrain children from visiting lakes, river banks, and seashores. Additionally, fishermen have also warned against venturing into the sea during this period.

District and taluk-level authorities have been kept on alert to carry out disaster management operations if need be. All government departments have been prepared with departments concerned instructed to keep a care and rescue center ready in every taluk as per an order by the deputy commissioner.

The India Meteorological Department forecasts light to moderate rain, thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speed reaching 30-40 kmph in coastal Karnataka. Ballari, Chamrajnagar, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga,  Dakshina Kannada, Davanagere, Kolar, Koppal Raichur and Uttara Kannada districts would be affected as well.

Meanwhile, in Karnataka, which is staring at a severe rainfall deficiency, the IMD on July 4 said that the city would witness heavy rains with thunderstorms for the next 4 days. Schools and colleges continue to function as usual with no downpours in the morning hours.
