Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai has asked educational institutions to maintain the status quo regarding the dress code until the high court gives its verdict in this regard.
As the Hijab row has now spread to other educational institutions across the state, the chief minister on Saturday held a meeting with top officials of the education department and education minister BC Nagesh.
The chief minister also consulted the legal department of the state for its opinion on the issue. The court would be informed about the government’s stand after talking to the advocate general’s opinion.
The matter is currently placed before the court. The high court will hear a petition filed by the six students from a Government Girls PU College in Udupi on Tuesday.
Nagesh reiterated that as per government rules framed in 2013, it had been decided that the respective College Development Authority would have the power to decide on the uniform of the students.
He also said that in their previous orders, the Bombay and Kerala High court have, in their orders banned the wearing of Hijab in educational institutions.
