The Lady Brabourne College was established by the Government of Bengal in July 1939 and named after the wife of Lord Brabourne, then Governor of Bengal. It was the first women’s college in Calcutta to promote higher education among Muslim women. It started with 35 Muslim women students and nine faculty members offering courses in social sciences. Science courses were introduced in July 1958. Presently the college offers Honors courses in 18 subjects, five of which are languages, four social sciences and nine sciences.
The college campus spread over 6 acres includes amenities such as laboratories, computer facilities, a medical unit, canteens, a career counseling cell and a sky-gazing unit.
The college library has a collection of about 1,00,000 books besides magazines and journals and a reading room for students and teachers. Apart from the general library each department has a seminar library collection.

Online admission to U.G. and P.G. courses is conducted as per the directives of the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal and the University of Calcutta.

Students from ISC, CBSE, WBHSC and different Boards of other states are eligible for admission to this college. Overseas students may also apply. Students are admitted strictly on the basis of merit. The lists of selected candidates are posted on the official website.
There is no provision for admission to pure general courses. The college follows government statutes regarding admission of candidates belonging to reserved categories.
The college has received an A grade from NAAC.
The college has been ranked among the top 20 colleges in the EducationWorld India Non-autonomous Colleges Rankings 2020-21.
The hostel has accommodation for 207 students and has facilities like the library, gym and common room for entertainment.
