The Lady Brabourne College was established by the Government of Bengal in July 1939 and named after the wife of Lord Brabourne, then Governor of Bengal. It was the first women's college in Calcutta to promote higher education among Muslim women. It started with 35 Muslim women students and 9 faculty members offering courses in social sciences. Science courses were introduced in July 1958. Presently the college offers Honors courses in 18 subjects, five of which are languages, four social sciences and nine sciences.
The college campus spread over 6.1 acres includes amenities such as laboratories, computer facilities, a medical unit, canteens, a career counseling cell and a sky-gazing unit. The college library has a collection of about 1,00,000 books besides magazines and journals and a reading room for students and teachers. Apart from the general library each department has a seminar library collection.
