Overview

Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS), Sonipat is a co-ed boarding school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Sited 37 kilometres north of Delhi at Rai, MNSS Sonipat was founded in 1973 by the Haryana government with the prime objective of providing K-XII holistic education with special focus on sports to deserving students at subsidised rates. Designed on the public-school pattern, MNSS is a fully residential and co-educational school.

The school’s administration is vested in a special board constituted by the state government, which ensures a stimulating environment for intellectual, aesthetic and physical development of its students.

Campus

Spread over about 250 acres of verdant splendour, the magnificent campus covers the school building, academic and administrative blocks, hostels, residential accommodation for staff, auditorium, and sports facilities. 

The MNSS campus is equipped with a well-stocked library; 75 readers can use the library at a time. There are 33041 books and approximately 1900 reference books in the Senior wing library and 13000 books in the junior wing library. Along with the library building, the imposing science block houses spacious and modern laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology besides the craft workshop. There is also the Bansilal auditorium and OAT with a seating capacity of 1000 people.

The School buildings are specially designed and are sheer architectural beauties. 

The school’s sports and games infrastructure is very modern and one of the best in the country. The sports infrastructure comprises the athletics stadium, swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, equestrian lines, football and astro-turf hockey fields, squash court, school infirmary and miles of boulevards skirted by majestic avenues, a multipurpose hall, 10 metres indoor rifle shooting range and a cricket pavilion. 

The campus provides an ideal environment for intellectual, aesthetic and physical development of the chosen few who are fortunate to get admission in our school.

Academics

The School is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and prepares the students for the All-India Secondary Examination (class X) and the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (class XII) following the 10+2 pattern of education. All streams are offered and thus the students can prepare themselves for courses in humanities, science, medicine, engineering, commerce and so on. The medium of instruction is English with adequate emphasis on the learning of Hindi as well.

A report on the performance of a student during the term is communicated to the parents at the end of each term through progress reports. These reports contain a record of the students’ progress and achievement in academics, general conduct and other co-curricular activities. Students are promoted as per regulations promulgated by CBSE.

Private tuition is prohibited. However, the school may arrange special coaching for students of classes X and XII during vacations on payment, if need arises. Special coaching for entrance examination in medicine, engineering, NDA, etc. is also arranged; The school also aims to prepare students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA). More than 400 students from the school have qualified in Indian Armed Forces so far.

Admission

Admissions are only conducted for students applying to class IV. The eligibility criteria for classes IV applicants should be between eight to 10 years. 

General admission to class IV (the main entry point) is made on the basis of the Physical Efficiency and Sports Aptitude Test (PESAT) and Game Specific Talent Test. If a candidate qualifies PESAT, he/she will be called for a written test (qualifying marks for the test will be 40 percent in each subject). The course for the written test for admission to class IV is based on the NCERT / Haryana Education Dept. Syllabus of class III.

Approximately 100 children are admitted in class IV. Boys and Girls are admitted in the ratio 1:1. Number of seats to be filled as mentioned above can be increased/decreased at the convenience of the school/government.

All the remaining vacant seats in other classes are filled under Outstanding Sports Person (OSP) category in class IV to IX and XI. These seats will be filled by candidates sponsored by Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Haryana or shall be filled by the school itself after obtaining permission from Sports & Youth Affairs Department of Haryana. The candidates sponsored should be medal winners in Khelo India, National School Games, Khel Maha Kumbh etc. Motilal Nehru School of Sports will admit such students based on Physical Efficiency & Sports Aptitude Test and game specific talent test. The admission will be restricted to only those sports disciplines that are available in school. 

Achievement

The school was ranked amongst the top 10 boarding schools in the country as per the education world rankings 2016. It is a prestigious boarding school whose students participate and compete with various public schools; some of the counterparts are Sainik school, Rastriya Indian Military College, Mayo College, The Doon School, Welham Boys’ School and Scindia School. Students have given an outstanding performance in sports at various national level tournaments.

Accommodation

The School has two well-furnished and fully equipped messes. All the students eat together in the same hall under the immediate supervision of the house masters, tutors and the hostel superintendent/matrons. The food served is wholesome and well-balanced as per requirements of the principles of diet. There is also an infirmary on campus to cater to the health and well-being of the boarders.
