Overview

Established in 1960, the National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur was formerly known as Regional Institute of Technology. Founded by Dr. Srikrishna Sinha, the then chief minister of Bihar, the institute was promoted with the aim of “nurturing talent and setting high standards of education and excellence”. It was renamed National Institute of Technology on December 27, 2002 and was given the status of a deemed university. NIT Jamshedpur is one of the 30 NITs and third in the chain of NITs established by the government of India. The institute is directly under the control of the ministry of human resource development (MHRD). NIT, Jamshedpur boasts several departments in various disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories. The campus is situated at a distance of 12 kilometers from Tatanagar Railway Station, on the banks of the rivers Kharkai. The institute is strategically located with the unique advantage of being surrounded by giant and medium scale industries such as Tata-Steel, Telco, Indian Steel Wire Products, Tata Tubes, Tinplate Company, Tata Timken etc. and reputed institutes like the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Xavier Labour Relations Institute and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi.

Campus

The 350-acre campus comprises the main building, a three storey library, the computer center, 11 hostels (9 boys’ hostels and 2 girls’ hostels), staff quarters, guest house, a students’ gymkhana, a post-office, a branch of State Bank of India, an ATM, central store and a dispensary. The hostels and departments are connected with high speed wireless LAN. The campus also offers courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. Apart from this, it also has cricket, hockey and football grounds.

The course work and laboratory classes are covered during the first five semesters each of 24 credits. In the last semester students are sent to work in industry for their project/ thesis work. The project work is of 20 credits. Other Programmes Non-Formal B.Sc. Engineering Education Program - a 12 semester certificate course in mechanical and electrical disciplines sponsored by Tata Motors, Jamshedpur and Adityapur Small Scale Industries Association (ASIA) apart from a few other industries located in Jamshedpur.

Admission

Undergraduate Courses There are 602 seats available of which 50 percent are reserved for candidates qualifying from Jharkhand and rest 50 percent are reserved for candidates of other states. Students must qualify through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The reservation policy of the Central government is followed in nominating students from S.C./S.T./O.B.C. categories. Few seats (decided by ministry of external relations) are reserved for students of foreign nations, which are nominated by ICCR, New Delhi. Postgraduate Courses For M.Tech M. Tech. students are admitted on the basis of their GATE score and their performance in a screening test / interview conducted by the institute. For MCA Students are admitted to the MCA program based on their performance at NIMCET. Candidates with a bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with mathematics at the (10+2) school level or at the bachelor's level or BCA are eligible. Those candidates who are appearing for the bachelor's degree examination and fulfill the above mentioned criteria are also eligible but they will have to furnish the result of the bachelor's degree examination before a stipulated date. For PhD Candidates must possess Master’s degree in engineering (in the relevant fields) or science or MCA or MBA or its equivalent from a recognized university with at least 60 percent marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in a 10 point scale) in the qualifying examination. A scholar will have to register in each semester till the submission of thesis, by payment of fees as applicable. Generally, registration for Autumn Semester will be in July/August and Spring Semester in December/January. For B.Sc Engineering Education Program Admission to the course is done through an open advertisement in local newspaper. Applications are invited from candidates sponsored by the industries for admission to Non-Formal B.Sc. Engineering. The admission test is conducted for the sponsored candidates at the institute.

National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur is a deemed university and one of the 30 NITs and third in the chain of NITs established by the Government of India. The institute ranks among the top technology institutes in India.

Accommodation

The campus hosts 11 hostels of which nine are for men and two for women. The hostels have internet access through Wi-Fi. Each hostel has a mess and a common room for recreational purposes such as watching TV, reading, or playing indoor games such as table-tennis, carom, badminton and volleyball courts.
