National Institute of Technology (NIT), Raipur is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India. Inaugurated by the first President of independent India Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1956, NIT, Raipur (known as government engineering college Raipur till 2005) offers 12 undergraduate, six postgraduate as well as doctoral level courses in twelve engineering disciplines, namely Applied Geology, Applied Mechanics, Architecture, Bio Medical Engineering, Bio Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Master of Computer Application, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Metallurgy Engineering. The NITR training and placement cell offers ample exposure for the students to the industry and also aids their placement in leading organizations under the public as well as private sectors.
Located in Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh state, the institute sprawls over an area of 100 acres at a distance of 5 km from Raipur railway station and 14 km from the airport on national highway 6, the Great Eastern Road. It is one of the biggest campuses amongst all the technical institutions in Chhattisgarh and houses 66,020 square meters of built-up area. Apart from the main building, the campus hosts six hostel blocks, residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff, a bank, a separate PWD and electricity office for campus maintenance, a well-equipped dispensary and a well-maintained guest house. The campus boasts an additional facility of a local railway station meant especially for the benefit of the students residing in the vicinity of the institute. There are 35 lecture halls, 13 drawing halls/studios, 85 laboratories, a canteen, cycle stand, N.C.C, N.S.S department, a student activity centre, co-operative store, and dispensary.
