More than 100 tribal students from a state-run residential school in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district marched overnight to the district headquarters in Baripada, highlighting the “inhumane” conditions they face in their hostel.
The students, studying in classes 8 and 9 at Basipitha Government High School, walked nearly 20 km to reach Baripada town in the morning. Upon learning about their protest, District Collector Hema Kanta Say met with them immediately.
The students complained about poor-quality food at the hostel and alleged physical assault by teachers. In response, the collector visited the school to investigate their grievances.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Netrananda Mallick acknowledged the legitimacy of their concerns and assured necessary action.
Following the discussions, the district administration arranged a bus to transport the students back to their school.
