Named after the freedom fighter and leader of independent India Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sardar Patel University (SPU) was founded in 1955 by Shri Bhailalbhai D. Patel, known as Bhaikaka. The university was established by an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the then-Bombay Province in December 1955 and was recognised by UGC under 2(f) of the UGC Act in October 1968. The university was initially assigned the status of a rural university. However, SPU was the first among all the universities in Gujarat to volunteer for the accreditation in 2000 and is today listed among the top 30 universities in India. The motto of SPU is “Excellence Matters". SPU houses 26 postgraduate departments, a constituent college and 87 affiliate colleges. The university offers 31 PG courses through the affiliated colleges/institutions from faculties such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, Engineering, Pharmacy, Medicine, Homeopathy, Home Science, Law and Education. Undergraduate courses are offered by the colleges and institutes affiliated with the university.
The university has a main campus and 3 satellite campuses. The main campus is set against a lush green pollution-free backdrop, offering all the modern amenities to students and staff. The campus facilities include the university library called Bhaikaka Library stocked with over 2,11,000 books, periodicals and other reading material and spacious reading rooms with seating arrangement for 700 people, well equipped labs for various disciplines, a health centre, sports centre, canteen and career and counseling cell. The university also hosts an International Students Centre to assist foreign students. The centre provides employment information and assistance to the students seeking employment along with vocational guidance in choosing a course or career, information on course of studies, training facilities, scholarships etc, counselling on personal problems related to their studies, financial difficulties etc.
Students from other universities or other board (other than Gujarat Higher Secondary Education Board, Gandhinagar) applying for admission in Sardar Patel University or any affiliated college must obtain the Provisional Eligibility Certificate from Sardar Patel University. Students must apply through prescribed application forms and attach the following documents with the application: Mark sheets of SSC (Class X), HSC (Class XII) and graduation and postgraduation degree mark sheet of all the years.(Also Attach marksheet of Fail. ATKT, Absent); School Leaving Certificate; Caste Certificate for SC/ST/SEBC from authorized officer; original copy of affidavit in case of gap between last examination passed and new admission and medical certificate if physically handicapped; if ex-army man, certificate from authorised officer and admission letter from centralised admission committee if applicable. SPU offers 40 graduate and post graduate courses, 20 diploma courses and eight certificate courses in faculties such as arts, science, business studies, education, home science, law, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, technology and homoeopathy. Research areas include polymer chemistry, materials science, bio-science, management, electronics, computer application, etc. SPU is implementing a campus diversity initiative with financial support from the Ford Foundation, New York and plans to launch programmes to enhance industry-academia collaboration and cooperation with UNISCO-UNIDO support.
