Students cleaning toilets in Bengaluru; minister vows action

December 22, 2023

Days after the video of students cleaning a sanitary pit surfaced in Karnataka, a similar incident of students being asked to clean school toilets in Bengaluru has come to light.

Two children, studying in grade 6 of Government Model Higher Primary School, Andrahalli in Peenya, were forced to clean toilets on Thursday according to reports, which has invoked severe criticism.

Soon after a video of the incident surfaced, parents of the students staged a protest on campus and expressed their displeasure.

Sources in the education department said that officials concerned visited the school immediately and took a report. Following initial investigation, the head mistress has been suspended.

It may be recollected that on December 18, the video of students in the Morarji Desai Residential School at Yaluvahalli in Malur of Kolar district surfaced online leaning social media users fuming. They said that this was a compromise for the safety of children.

Following the development, the principal and two other staff of the school were arrested on charges of making students clean pits and corporal punishments.

Responding to the incident, the minister for school education and literacy said “This is a condemnable act. The government will not mince words in criticizing this. We will ensure that such incidents do not repeat again. I will act in the days to come. This is shameful. We will send our officers to examine it because this is not an incident that took place yesterday. Once one such incident surfaces, I presume, a lot more will come to light. We cannot sit quiet knowing that this has happened despite being so strict.”
