Supreme Court rejects plea to include CPR training in school curriculum

November 29, 2023

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, rejected a plea urging the inclusion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in the school curriculum, emphasizing that such decisions fall within the realm of educational policy. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, heading the bench, stated that while there are numerous valuable subjects for children to learn, the court cannot mandate the government to include all of them in the curriculum.

The bench, which included Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, highlighted that matters like environmental awareness and brotherhood were essential, and decisions on curriculum content are at the government’s discretion.

The petitioner, a resident of Ranchi, argued that sudden cardiac arrest after COVID-19 made CPR training crucial. The bench, however, maintained that entering into school curriculum decisions is not the court’s role, and the government should determine a comprehensive curriculum.

It noted that the plea pertains to policy matters and suggested the petitioner approach the appropriate authorities with suggestions. The court concluded by stating it is not inclined to issue the sought mandamus and disposed of the petition.
