UGC set to revise NET syllabus

November 22, 2023

Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), announced plans to revise the syllabus for the National Eligibility Test (NET) by assembling an expert panel. The UGC-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), serves as an examination for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and determines eligibility for assistant professor roles in Humanities, Social Sciences, selected Indian and foreign languages, and specific science subjects.

Held biannually in 83 subjects, typically in June and December, the UGC-NET syllabi were last updated in 2017. However, Kumar noted significant changes in higher education post the 2020 launch of the National Education Policy (NEP), emphasizing the need for multidisciplinary curricula and comprehensive education.

In a recent commission meeting, it was decided to initiate the revision of UGC-NET subject syllabi. Kumar stated that the UGC plans to establish an expert committee to undertake this task. He assured candidates of a transitional period before implementing the updated syllabus to ensure a smooth transition for all involved.
