The protest called by private schools across Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday to protest the arrest of a principal and teacher from a private school for alleged suicide of one of the students has been called off.
It was previously decided that all private schools affiliated to CBSE, ICSE and the UP state board would remain shut on Tuesday as a mark of protest against the school staff held for the abetment of suicide of a class XI student in Azamgarh.
The protest was then called off after private schools met Sanjay Prasad, Secretary, Home, Uttar Pradesh and subsequently with Vijay Kiran Singh, Director General Education, Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the National Independent Schools Alliance in a statement said, “They have assured us the setting up of a committee and making an SOP within 15 days. This Committee will consist of Schools representatives and government representatives along with judicial representatives. In the given circumstances it is best that the Closure is called off. The decision of closure is being withdrawn with immediate effect
It may be recollected that the student jumped to death from the third floor of the school building and her kin had blamed the principal and teacher for frequent harassment which pushed her to take the extreme step.
The decision to keep schools shuttered had come following a meeting of the Unaided Private Schools Association (USPA) and the Association of Private Schools on Saturday.
USPA president Anil Agarwal had expressed that there was a need for developing a framework to save innocent school staff from matters that are subjudice unless their involvement is proved. He said that the primary objection in this case has been that the arrests were made even before the investigation commenced.
