Amid the rapid rise in the number of Covid-19 cases, several state boards as well as the national and international boards have deferred and cancelled the Class X and XII board examinations.

The examinations in most states are scheduled to be conducted between mid-April and June end.

Many state governments are taking strict actions to curb the spread of the disease. Noticing the steady increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, students, parents, teachers, state governments and political parties had been urging the Centre to postpone or cancel the Class X and XII board exams.

After a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union education minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank and other senior officials of the ministry on April 13, the Centre announced that the CBSE Class X board examination was being cancelled and CBSE Class XII examinations postponed.

The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has decided to defer the 2021 ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) examinations scheduled to start from May 4 because of the surge in Covid-19 cases, the CISCE announced recently. The revised dates will be announced after reviewing the situation.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has also decided to cancel the board exams in India. Students will be promoted to the next class or be eligible to receive the school passing certificate based on a special assessment system. Students will be marked based on their coursework and predicted grades.

The Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) will not be going ahead with the June 2021 exams. Instead, it will switch to school-assessed grades, so that students can receive certification and progress with their education.
