Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) was set up at Safdarjung Hospital in November 2001 by Padma Shree Dr. Jagdish Prasad, the founder principal of the college. The first batch of MBBS students enrolled at VMMC in February 2002. The college has been recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and is affiliated with Guru Govind Singh I P University, Delhi for its undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The college took off on a modest note on infrastructure carved out of the portions of the Safdarjang Hospital, today it is housed in a state of art centrally air-conditioned building. With world class infrastructure, highly qualified and competent faculty and research projects of the highest order including those of ICMR, CSIR and WHO, the college consistently finds its place among the top medical colleges in India. In 2011, VMMC was ranked No.12 among top medical colleges in India by a survey conducted by India Today magazine.
