Overview

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), founded in 1887 in Matunga, Mumbai as Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, is one of the premiere engineering institutes in the country and one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia. It was re-christened to Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, on 26 January 1997. Although VJTI became an academically and administratively autonomous institute in 2004, it retains its affiliation with the University of Mumbai and its diplomas and degrees are issued by the university. The institute also receives financial assistance from the Government of Maharashtra, and the World Bank project TEQIP I and II. VJTI is the central technical institute of Maharashtra and is well reputed for its programs at the diploma, degree, doctorate and post graduate levels in Engineering and Technology, in addition to various esteemed research projects. The institute was honoured with the ‘Seventh best private engineering college’ rank in the Mint C-Fore Survey in 2008, the ‘Eighth best private engineering college’ rank in an Outlook magazine survey in 2007, and the ‘Ninth best among all engineering colleges in India’ in India Today survey in 1999. VJTI’s goodwill and commendable reputation in the industry invites prestigious companies to the institute every year for campus interviews and recruitment including Microsoft, Google, and L&T, among others.

The institute has 12 academic departments with 9 offering certificate, diploma, degree, post-graduate and/or doctoral programs in the following disciplines: Civil & Environmental Engineering Structural Engineering Computer Engineering & Information Technology Master in Computer Applications (MCA) Electrical Engineering Electronics Engineering Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering Mechanical Engineering Production Engineering Textile Manufacturing Technical & Applied Chemistry Three departments act as support system and run courses for other degree and diploma programs, but do not have offer exclusive programs of their own. They are: Mathematics Department Physics Department Humanities & Management Department Extra-Curricular Activities The institute offers a host of co-curricular activities including dramatics, debates, lectures etc. The Social Group of students organizes the ‘Annual Social’ in which different entertainment programs are presented by the students. Noted programs include the ‘Pratibimb’ which is the annual cultural festival of the institute, Technovanza, the national-level annual techno-management festival of VJTI and Enthusia, the national-level annual sports festival managed by the VJTI Gymkhana. Other student societies actively involved in programs at VJTI are Society of Robotics & Automation (SRA), Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE), VJTI Collegiate Chapter, Debate & Literary Arts Society (DLA), Rangwardhan and the Entrepreunship Cell (E-Cell).
