World Sports Journalists Day 2019

July 2, 2019

Journalists play an important role in the society by placing well-researched facts before us. Sports journalists present detailed information on various local, national and international sports. It is due to the promptness and reporting skills of the sports scribes that sports aficionados worldwide are able to access the latest information about sporting events and sports players. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the current sensation in the world of sports and sports scribes are leaving no stone unturned to cover the same. The World Sports Journalists Day is observed on July 2  every year to recognise the contribution of sports journalists in promoting sports. On this occasion, we bring to you a few facts about the World Sports Journalists Day.

World Sports Journalists Day was established by the International Sports Press Association in 1994 to mark the 70th anniversary of its foundation.

ISPA was founded on the July 2, 1924 during the Summer Olympics in Paris. It comprises continental and national associations.

Its partners are big sports federations, such as International Olympic Committee, FIFA, IAAF and others.

The sports journalists around the world are united by the ISPA.

Today,  sports has become a burgeoning global business with huge money involved ranging from sponsorships to staging Olympic games and World Cups.

These events have been able to attract the attention of well-known investigative and skilled journalists from across the globe.

World Sports Journalists Day is observed across the globe every year with much pomp and gaiety.

This day was particularly created to celebrate the achievements of members of the sporting media.

It aims at encouraging the sports journalists to strive for excellence in their work and to set an example to the world.

This day also encourages the journalists to work harder and invites more people into the profession.

Most countries have their individual national associations for sports journalists. Sports Journalists’ Federation of India (SJFI) was set up on February 27, 1976.

In India too various sports associations, and SJFI celebrate this day by acknowledging the contributing of the scribes towards sports.
