Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Theog, Shimla is a coeducational residential school affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. The school’s foundation stone was laid on December 20, 1986 by Shri Virbhadra Singh, Honourable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The school is a part of the JNV group of schools run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, New Delhi – an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Education, Government of India. JNVs are alternate schools for talented children in rural areas of India which aim at providing children the best residential school system irrespective of their socio-economic background. JNV, Theog, Shimla boasts 530 students from class VI to XII.
The 27.4 acre school campus hosts both old and new buildings with state of the art infrastructure. The classrooms are networked by a computer and intranet; the students, staff and administration have access to email and an intranet system for quick and easy communication with one another. The school houses a well stocked library, well equipped labs for science, math, language and computers, multimedia classrooms, multipurpose hall, music rooms, an indoor games room, medical infirmary, gymnasium and a playground measuring 15,000 square meters.
Affiliated with CBSE, the school offers education from class VI through XII. As most students at the JNVs come from schools with medium of instruction being their mother tongue/vernacular language instruction is provided in same medium till class VIII however intensive teaching of Hindi and English as language subjects and co-media are undertaken through skilful use of the media and modern techniques of teaching languages for children to study in Hindi/English after class VII or VIII without difficulty. Thereafter, the common medium of instruction in all Navodaya Vidyalayas is Hindi (for social studies and humanities) and English for mathematics and science.
In classes XI and XII, there are five compulsory subjects and an optional subject – Hindi. At Senior Secondary level, there are two streams offered, the science stream – English, physics, biology and chemistry as compulsory subjects and Hindi / Maths as optional and commerce stream – English, business studies, accountancy and economics as compulsory subjects and Hindi/math as optional.

Admissions to JNVs are made through national level competitive examination conducted by the CBSE called the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). The test is nonverbal, class neutral and designed to ensure that talented children from the rural areas are able to compete without facing any disadvantages. Children are admitted at class VI level and admissions to classes IX and XI are made against the vacant seats through regional level examination/marks in the previous qualifying examination.
A total of 75 percent of seats are reserved for rural children and a minimum of 33 percent of seats are reserved for girls. SC/STs also have due reservations of 15 percent and 7.5 percent respectively.
Children who have passed Class V from any recognised school of Shimla District and are between 9 to 13 years of age are eligible for admission to Class VI at JNV, Theog provided they clear the JNVST. As per the scheme, a maximum of 80 students can be admitted in Class VI.
Fees
Fee of INR Rs. 200 per month is chargeable only for boy students of general category studying in class IX to XII.
JNV Theog is an alternate school for talented children from rural areas of Shimla and aims to provide the children the best residential school system irrespective of their socio-economic background.
The school hosts 10 dormitories of which five are for boys and five for girls. The dorms have been refurbished and provide comfortable accommodation. A mess attached to the dormitories provides wholesome nutritious food to the children and staff.
