November cover Final

Generous compliment
Happy 24th anniversary! Congratulations to EducationWorld for publishing thought-provoking, challenging, iconoclastic features that rival the best journalistic output.
Nothing I have read anywhere on the subject of education, matches this publication for its scope, variety and mindfulness.
Take a bow!

Practical solution
I am a regular reader of EducationWorld. Your cover story ‘Why do Indians succeed everywhere except in India?’ (EW October) has sparked a raging debate in my household over the past several weeks. Let me share the consensus.
A number of those starring on your cover don’t even deserve to be called migrants as they are mostly second-generation citizens of the country they call home. But the handful of those raised in India and who migrated abroad seeking higher education and well-paying jobs have availed all the benefits of the Indian education system, be it through government quotas or scholarships. This effectively drains the country of its resources with no returns.
One practical solution is to introduce a mandate on a par with that for medical students who must serve in rural areas after completing their medical degree programme. Likewise, qualified engineers from the premier IITs, IIITs and NITs should also be obliged to serve in India for at least a decade before migrating abroad. How to retain them further is for our policymakers to decide. Hope they are listening.

Deep connect
Congratulations to EducationWorld on your 24th bumper anniversary issue (EW November). As usual, the issue is packed with enriching content and information.
I especially liked reading your insightful cover story ‘Why do Indians succeed everywhere except in India?’ which I am sure is on the minds of millions of resident Indians. And without doubt, this conundrum has a deep connect with education. Your five special essays authored by respected commentators in India and abroad were also worth a read.
Kudos once again!

Morale booster
The Young Achievers column (EW November) featuring Asian Games medalists is a huge morale booster to these super champions. Beating the Chinese at their own game in their own backyard is a huge achievement for the Bengal wonder pair of Ayhika and Sutirtha Mukherjee. Kudos to them!
It was also shocking to read about the experience of sprinter-hurdler Jyothi Yarraji who was almost disqualified for no fault of hers. Her parents have made immense sacrifices to enable Jyothi to pursue her aspiration to become a world champion and we hope she will bring home a medal in the upcoming Paris Olympics. I wish EW could allocate more space to inspirational sportswomen.

Mammoth effort
Many Congratulations to Team EW on your 24th anniversary. Despite many odds, you have never failed to deliver well-researched cover stories and essays by eminent educationists on relevant issues confronting Indian education month on month, year on year. I also salute your mammoth effort towards collating and publishing your comprehensive EducationWorld India Higher Education, School and Preschool Rankings.
Please continue your dedicated service to further the cause of education!

First steps
Your Education News from Tamil Nadu (EW November) titled ‘Recruitment foot dragging’ is a typical example of a poorly managed system that strives for excellence by hook or by crook. If this is the plight of Anna University, ranked #427 by QS, a reputed London-based higher ed rankings agency, one can only wonder about other less reputed institutions.
Provision of basic infrastructure and full-strength faculty are first steps towards providing quality education. If the state government has failed to achieve even this basic need despite a showcause order from the Madras high court three years ago, I can imagine the plight of thousands of aspirational students enrolled in other higher ed institutions.
