Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner in terms of academic achievements, with a significant number of students scoring above 80% in both secondary (class 10) and higher secondary (class 12) exams. According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Education, a remarkable 58.2% of students in Uttar Pradesh achieved the 80% milestone in the higher secondary exam, the highest percentage in the country across all boards. The study comes as part of the Centre’s efforts to standardize assessments among various education boards through PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis).

Similarly, in the secondary exam, 63.1% of students in Uttar Pradesh scored above 80%. However, the only state that marginally surpassed Uttar Pradesh in class 10 was West Bengal, with 64.2% of students achieving the feat. Other significant states like Maharashtra and Karnataka reported 58.5% and 40.5% of class 10 students, and 51.4% and 40.1% of class 12 students, respectively, scoring above 80%.

While Uttar Pradesh shines in terms of academic excellence, the study also highlighted a concerning trend regarding dropouts. Uttar Pradesh leads the pack in terms of dropout rates, with 5.9 lakh students discontinuing their education in class 10, followed by Bihar with 5 lakh dropouts and Madhya Pradesh with 4.4 lakh. In class 12, Uttar Pradesh again recorded the highest number of dropouts nationally, with 5.4 lakh out of 18 lakh students leaving school. Bihar and Madhya Pradesh ranked second and third, with 3.4 lakh and 1.7 lakh dropouts, respectively.

The assessment further revealed that the top five boards, namely Uttar Pradesh, CBSE, Maharashtra, Bihar, and West Bengal, account for approximately 50% of the student population, while the remaining 55 boards in the country enroll the rest. Among these, Uttar Pradesh holds the lion’s share with 14% and 16% in the secondary and higher secondary levels, respectively. In line with the national trend, the science and arts streams are the most popular choices among students in Uttar Pradesh, with 57% opting for science, 38% for arts, and commerce remaining stagnant at 5%.

It is worth noting that in Karnataka, 26% of students pursue arts, while 37% are enrolled in science and commerce streams. In Rajasthan, a significant majority of 71% students prefer arts, whereas Andhra Pradesh sees 76% of its students enrolled in the science stream.
