Overview

Seth G.S. Medical College and King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, Mumbai were founded in 1926 to “cater to the health care needs of the northern parts of the island”. The Seth G.S. Medical College is affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. With about 390 staff physicians and 550 resident doctors, the 1800 bedded hospital treats about 1.8 million out-patients and 78,000 in-patients annually and provides both basic care and advanced treatment facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery. Funded mainly by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, these institutions render free service to the underprivileged sections of the society. The college has been consistently ranked among the top ten medical colleges in India by leading education surveys conducted annually.

Campus

The campus is spread across two acres hosting four buildings, of which one is 14 storeyed while the other three are four storeyed. The college houses a well stocked library with a vast collection of medical literature, and the laboratories are well equipped with adequate infrastructure. The college also provides infrastructure for sports and recreation and has a canteen on campus.

Admission

For undergraduate courses All admissions to the graduate courses in medicine and allied specialties in Maharashtra are administered centrally by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) through the common entrance test MHT CET. 15 percent of total seats are reserved for all-India quota to be filled through the All India Premedical Entrance Test conducted by the CBSE. For post-graduate courses For students who have completed their MBBS from a recognized medical college in Maharashtra, admission to post graduate courses is through the state level postgraduate medical entrance test. For students from other parts of India who have passed MBBS from any college recognized by the Medical Council of India, admission is through the All India Postgraduate Medical Courses Entrance Test conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Achievement

Seth GS Medical College was the first Indian medical college to introduce an Occupational Therapy School and Physiotherapy School in Asia. It was also a pioneer in having an Ayurveda Research Centre in conjunction with an allopathic set-up. The college also started the first Plasma Fractionation Unit in Asia, and the first dedicated Esophageal Laboratory in the country. It is the first Indian medical college and hospital having an indexed medical journal (Journal of Postgraduate Medicine). It’s also the first to have a clinical pharmacology ward in the country, a dedicated orthopaedic department and a department of cardio-thoracic pathology in India.
