Tamil Nadu: Schools to reopen for class 9 and 11 from Feb 8

February 1, 2021

The Tamil Nadu state government on Sunday announced that colleges are allowed to reopen for all undergraduate and postgraduate students from February 8. It has also allowed schools to reopen for classes 9 and 11 from the same day.

The state government had reopened colleges for final year students from December 7, 2020 while schools for classes 10 and 12 opened from January 19, 2021. A statement issued by Chief Minister K Palaniswami stated that each classroom would have only 25 pupils to maintain social distancing norms.

The move was considered the interests of students (who are slated to sit for public examinations due during March- April) and they shall be provided immunity-boosting vitamin and zinc tablets, the CM had said. Permission is granted to schools to function only for these two classes by adhering to the government’s Standard Operating Procedure, he said.

“I appeal to parents, teachers and students to extend their full cooperation to the government in its efforts aimed at the welfare of students and to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic,” he had said.

Hostels for the college and school students are also allowed to reopen as well.
