Tripura government prioritizes multilingual education: CM

February 22, 2024

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, in a significant announcement on Wednesday, articulated the steadfast commitment of his government to actively develop and implement a robust multilingual education system, aligning with the tenets outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. Emphasizing the imperative of preserving the linguistic heritage of all ethnic tribes in the northeastern state, Saha underscored that students now enjoy the enriching opportunity to pursue their studies in eight tribal languages, including Kokborok, within the school curriculum.

Addressing a gathering during a program organized on the auspicious occasion of International Mother Language Day at Rabindra Bhavan, Saha remarked, “The National Education Policy 2020 has unequivocally laid emphasis on the promotion of a comprehensive multilingual education system in the country. Drawing inspiration from the prime minister’s outlined priorities, the BJP-IPFT government is diligently working towards the realization of this vision by adopting various strategic measures.”

Asserting the government’s unwavering commitment to recognizing and honoring the diverse linguistic fabric of the region, the chief minister announced the systematic introduction of Kokborok in 1,296 primary schools, 115 secondary schools, and 65 higher secondary schools. In addition, the Chakma language has been seamlessly incorporated into the curriculum of 123 schools, providing students with the option to delve into languages such as Halam, Kuki, Mizo, Manipuri, and Garo at the school level.

“In Tripura, the ambit of education in Kokborok and Mizo languages extends up to the 12th standard. Moreover, aspiring professionals can opt to write their examination papers in Kokborok for competitive exams, including the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) and the Tripura Judicial Service,” he elucidated.

The day’s festivities were further accentuated by a vibrant and colorful rally organized in the city, commemorating International Mother Language Day, a global observance held annually on February 21 to champion the cause of linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as to celebrate the richness of multilingualism.
