AICTE urged to relax BBA, BCA norms for colleges

February 5, 2024

The Federation of Self-Financing Technical Institutions and the All India and Punjab Unaided Colleges Association have jointly appealed to the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to reconsider its stance on the approval process for BBA and BCA colleges. In a meeting with AICTE Member Secretary Rajive Kumar on Sunday, President Dr. Anshu Kataria and Senior Vice-President Amit Sharma highlighted the historical exemption of BBA, BCA, and BMS courses from AICTE oversight since the AICTE Act’s passage in 1987.

Expressing surprise and concern, they argued that bringing these courses under the AICTE’s jurisdiction after almost four decades is unprecedented and may impose an additional financial burden on students. Dr. Kataria emphasized that such a move could adversely affect the flexibility and autonomy of these programs.

Moreover, Sharma and Kataria cautioned that if the AICTE does not reconsider its position and relax the norms, they would be compelled to seek legal intervention through the courts. They stressed the need for a collaborative and consultative approach to ensure the best interests of students and educational institutions are considered in the decision-making process. The associations are keen on finding an amicable resolution that preserves the integrity of these academic programs while maintaining regulatory standards in the evolving landscape of higher education.
